Code and Cake

Write the code that only you can write

Programming is a creative endeavor. It doesn’t always feel like that, of course. Writing day job code isn’t always the most fulfilling thing, but I believe that you and I are just as much of a creative as the poet writing technical help documentation for a living. And just like that poet, sometimes you have to sit down and write some poetry.

Code becomes poetry when it’s the code that only you can write. Maybe you like to cook and your poetry is the perfect recipe app. Maybe you have a friend in another department with no resources and your poetry is a few small scripts that saves them hours. Or maybe even you’re just very particular and your poetry is a static site generator that works exactly the way you want it to. It doesn’t have to matter. It just has to matter to you.

Whatever code feels like poetry to you, write that code! It’s ok if nothing comes to mind right away. Creativity can’t be forced, it just happens sometimes. Just be ready for it when it strikes.
